Well we certainly had an interesting holiday!

Each year, we pack up the girls and drive down to hubby's parent's house to celebrate Christmas. We usually stop at my parents on the way to attend mass and celebrate Christmas Eve with them. Being that it was Miss Mia's first Christmas with us, she was spoiled rotten and loved on by each and every family member.

Hubby's parents live on about 3 acres in the country off of a small county road. My girls are very good off lead, great on command, and they have always stayed right with us whenever we are out in the yard with them. My father-in-law has taken one of them out with him on occasion when he takes the trash out to the burn barrel to burn it. As usual, he made one such trip out to the burn barrel and took Nedra out with him. Nedra happily obliged at the opportunity to go out and romp in the yard. Hubby, mother-in-law, sister-in-law and I stayed in the house and watched TV, when the door opened and closed and Nedra trotted in and laid down in front of me. My FIL came in after her and told us that she had gotten into some pork fat that they had thrown out for the animals earlier that week, and that she had probably gotten two good handfuls down before he had the chance to stop her. At first we thought he was joking, and questioned him on it repeatedly, but as we realized that he was serious, the panic started to set in. ohmy.gif

With all of Nedra's digestive issues, and knowing that her pancreas isn't in the best of shape, I decided that I should induce vomiting and made the call to a very good friend at 8AM on Christmas Day ( :bighug: ) to ask how to do it. So, out we go, onto the deck, in 34 degree rainy weather with the bottle of peroxide and a turkey baster.

Poor Miss Nedra was not giving up the goods. We had to put about a half of a bottle of peroxide down her before it finally came up, but it all came up. Poor thing was cold and shivering, upset with us for feeding her the stuff that made her feel so icky, and lonely while we sat in the house watching her and waiting for it to come up. Even though it was pretty awful for her, I'm glad that we did it, as the bits of fat, gristle, and even a few old bones were very apparent in what had come up.

We fasted her for the rest of the day, as hubby had forgotten to pack her digestive enzymes BangHead.gif and she couldn't keep her kibble down without them. We made the return trip up to Cleveland later that evening so that we could get them settled in and get some food into her the next day.

All in all, it was interesting, but made me all the more thankful for family and wonderful boxer friends who are there for me when I need them. wub.gif

Poor Nedra, and poor you too Jessica! People asked me today how my Christmas was and my reply was "It was great! Nobody cried!" Maybe I should change that to "It was great, we didn't need the bottle of peroxide and the turkey baster!"

It's always nice to have those boxer friends too wink.gif

Hope Nedra's tummy is all settled and she had no more problems with her little eating adventure.

Living with boxers is always an adventure! Bummer for Nedra having to "return" the goodies though but I'm sure it was for the best.

How's she doing now?
Burning River Boxers
Hi ladies,
Thanks for the thoughts smile.gif She's doing well and has had three full meals with her digestive enzymes and kept them down. I've been keeping her crated for a good hour after eating to minimize the amount of activity afterwards as well - at this point, I'm just trying to play it safe for the sake of my carpets more than anything. wink.gif

I think that she was a bloodhound in a previous life - they could have thrown that pork fat anywhere on those 3 acres and she would have found it. As soon as we had arrived, I busted her for paying a little bit too close of attention to a certain spot up by the front porch. I called her to me, she ignored me, I yelled at her and told her to "LEAVE IT AND COME NOW." (there may have been a dammit in there somewhere laugh.gif ) and she finally conceeded. Come to find out later that they had thrown some corn chips out for the birds that she had found. tantrum2.gif

I have no idea what to do with that girl, but in most respects I really do feel sorry for her, as I know that most of her morsel hunting is left over mental issues from being starved for so long when she was unhealthy. Otherwise, she's back to her ornery, crotchety, sweet old self. She's my good girl and I wouldn't trade her for the world, no matter how naughty she is. wub.gif

Now Nedra! Stop scaring mommy like that!!!! BangHead.gif You know she gives you good things to eat to make you healthy and you can't go eating nasty yucky things you find on the ground.

Jess, I'm so glad you were able to make all the bad stuff come back up. I'm sure that was unpleasant for poor Miss Nedra but it is in her best interest. It's amazing what they can get themselves into.

Big grouphug.gif to you and a kiss2.gif for Nedra.

Oh, that is not a nice way to spend Christmas, but I am glad that everything worked out ok for Miss Nedra.

Word of warning though, the next time you go for the peroxide it won't be so easy... we have had to make Willis vomit twice by that method and the second time he caught a whiff and ran away from me barking and freaking out. I pretty much had to wrestle him down... but he had a whole belly full of grapes (about 2 lbs) so I couldn't very well leave that in there.

Jessica, so good to hear things have settled with Nedra's tummy... I'm sure the peroxide event was not fun for either of you.

Geeze, what a scare!!!
Poor Nedra, she has enough intestinal issues without creating more self inflicted ones.

Glad you knew who to call and what to do as it could have gotten really ugly (and expensive) Thank goodness for friends in times of emergency.

Happy to hear she is back to her old self and hopefully learned a lesson (yeah, right)

Perhaps you could share with the members the technique used?

Straight peroxide administered via turkey baster down the back of throat??
(I've heard of it used, but never had to do it)

Thanks for sharing your adventure and reminding us all how quick these guys are to get into life threatening situations.

I was the same, Jill - I had heard of it being used with other's dogs but have never had to do it myself, so I was at a loss when the time came for me to do it myself. We started out with about a quarter of a cup of straight hydrogen peroxide and used the turkey baster to squirt it down the back of her throat. (Hubby administered while I relayed instructions from the other end of the phone.) We waited 15 minutes to see if it would come up, but nothing did, so we gave more. It was pretty difficult, she wasn't too receptive of us squirting the stuff down her throat, and most times more of it ended up on the deck than in her belly, plus I was worried about it going down the wrong pipe, so I couldn't really be sure how much got down, but we just kept giving a quarter of a cup at a time, waiting 15 minutes between. Finally, after about the third dose of it, her breakfast (and the fat, bones, etc) came up in a big, frothy mess. It worked exactly as expected, but it just took a little longer than we had thought!

Thanks for the good thoughts girls! I really appreciate them! grouphug.gif

Oddly enough, if you're having trouble using the turkey baster, the dog will lap it up himself. You can just give it to them in a spoon.
Cindy/Copper Hill
I'm so glad she's better, Jess. :bighug:

Me, I am just glad the call came at 8:00 am my time and not 8:00 am your time. I don't make a bit of sense at 8:00 am your time. new_rofl.gif

I had a strong suspicion it was you Cindy!!

Thanks for helping save one of the gang with your vast knowledge and wisdom :daman:

And thank you Jessica for explaining the "how to" for us

Nedra sure sounds like my boy Desi. He's had peroxide administered quite a few times in a panic as he also has a very diseased digestive system.

So glad everyone is on the other side of this episode and doing better! wavey.gif

I'm glad to hear Nedra is feeing better.
